A chilling revelation has emerged from a public inquiry into a series of deadly attacks in Nottingham, England. Valdo Calocane, the triple killer, visited the very heart of British intelligence, MI5 headquarters, seeking arrest. But here's where it gets controversial: despite this red flag, Calocane was not detained, and three years later, he went on a murderous rampage.
In May 2020, a young woman, aged 22, had a terrifying encounter with Calocane. He broke into her flat, and in her desperate attempt to escape, she fell from a window, sustaining severe injuries to her spine. She shared her harrowing experience with the inquiry, revealing that a police officer informed her that Calocane could not be prosecuted due to his mental health status at the time. However, it was later revealed that Calocane had not received a formal diagnosis for his mental health issues until July 2020, when he was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia.
And this is the part most people miss: an intelligence report from MI5 about Calocane's visit in May 2021 was sent to Nottinghamshire Police. Yet, despite this knowledge, Calocane was not stopped from carrying out his deadly attacks in June 2023.
PC Foster, a Metropolitan Police officer, was one of the responders to Calocane's visit to MI5 headquarters. He described Calocane as "calm and collected" during their interaction. Foster's reasoning for not pressing Calocane further on his motives for wanting to be arrested raises questions. He stated, "I was content with the response that he gave." But was this enough to ensure public safety?
The inquiry is now questioning why Calocane's visit to MI5, and his desire to be arrested, was not investigated further. Sophie Cartwright KC, representing the survivors, asked, "Was it not essential that somebody had to ask [Calocane] the question: 'Why have you come to Thames House asking to be arrested?'"
