PM Modi's Warm Welcome: India-UAE Ties Strengthened with President MBZ's Visit (2026)

A whirlwind visit underscores a powerful bond: Prime Minister Modi personally greeted UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan at the Delhi airport, a clear signal of the deep friendship between India and the UAE. This high-profile, yet brief, two-hour visit highlights the significance of their relationship, especially amidst evolving global dynamics.

This visit, at the invitation of Prime Minister Modi, takes place against the backdrop of significant developments in West Asia. Prime Minister Modi himself took to social media, expressing his warm welcome and emphasizing the importance of the India-UAE friendship. He stated he was looking forward to their discussions.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) highlights that this visit builds on the momentum of recent high-level exchanges. For instance, there was a visit by Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan in September 2024, and Dubai Crown Prince and UAE Deputy Prime Minister Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum in April 2025.

Talks between PM Modi and Sheikh Mohamed are scheduled to focus on strengthening the India-UAE Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. They will also exchange views on regional and global issues of mutual interest, according to the MEA. This is Sheikh Mohamed’s third official visit to India as UAE President, and his fifth in the last decade – a clear indication of the frequent high-level interactions between New Delhi and Abu Dhabi.

The timing of this visit is particularly interesting, coinciding with ongoing diplomatic efforts in West Asia. The United States is preparing to move forward with its Gaza Peace Plan, including the proposed National Committee for the administration of Gaza. And this is the part most people miss... Prime Minister Modi has been invited by US President Donald Trump to be part of the Gaza Peace Board, according to a White House statement.

India and the UAE have seen consistent engagement across various sectors in recent months. Earlier this month, Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi visited the UAE to boost military cooperation. In December, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar traveled to Abu Dhabi for the India-UAE joint commission meeting and strategic dialogue.

India and the UAE share strong ties, supported by frameworks such as the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), the Local Currency Settlement system, and a Bilateral Investment Treaty. They also collaborate in multilateral forums, including the UN, BRICS, I2U2, and the UAE-France-India trilateral.

According to the MEA, Sheikh Mohamed’s short visit provides an opportunity for both leaders to review progress in bilateral ties and explore new areas of cooperation amidst evolving regional dynamics. But here's where it gets controversial... Do you think this visit signals a shift in India's foreign policy? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
